Side-Fx Live is a fully customizable, fast paced, dynamic, educational and totallyPhRMA / AdvaMed compliant program presented by the authors of Side-Fx master magicians, Scott Tokar and Harrison Carroll. Your audience will be delighted as Scott and Harrison personally TEACH you how to do some of the top effects from their critically acclaimed magical textbook. The Side-Fx "Live" CME Seminar is here!
- This activity is designed for physicians and other healthcare providers who work directly with pediatric patients in a clinical setting.
- In order to receive credit, participants must attend the course and submit a credit application and evaluation form before leaving. Statements of credit will be issued 6-8 weeks after the course.
Needs Assessment: The purpose of Side-Fx is to provide the healthcare professional with tools and techniques specifically designed to divert a child’s mind from the many fears associated with a visit to the doctor. By creating an unexpected, surprise-filled, magical atmosphere for the patient, habitual nervousness and concern can be overcome by wonder and amazement, and more importantly, result in better patient compliance and cooperation in the exam room.
Many of the physicians involved in the Side-Fx project have discovered that a small amount of time invested in patient interaction and bedside manner up front yields immeasurable results in both office productivity and patient satisfaction later on. By minimizing the unproductive time traditionally needed to calm a screaming, crying, or frightened child, these physicians were able to attend to their next patient sooner and in a more relaxed mood. In short, not only did they see an increase in happier patients, but their offices also became more time efficient and many practitioners have found that they were able to end their day more joyfully and with less stress by utilizing the Side-Fx techniques.
Lots of pediatricians already employ a variety of creative techniques— from hanging brightly colored posters on the wall to giving out lollipop rewards following successful exams — to alleviate the fears associated with a child’s visit to the doctor. Today, it’s not unusual to find medical offices with elevated toy trains, Nickelodeon on the “big screen,” and state-of-the-art video games in the waiting room. Anything that can be done to reduce patient stress can (and will) have a positive impact on a medical practice. Most likely, clinicians have their favorite techniques already in place, and Side-Fx doesn’t aim to change those. The goal of Side-Fx is to provide the clinician with new and unexpected methods that challenge them to think outside the box and ultimately make the patient interaction more productive, healing, and calming.
Objectives: Through the Side-Fx activity, participants will:
- Learn several new methods to initiate contact and bedside manner with the anxious or shy pediatric patient.
- Be able to confer a fresh, positive atmosphere to alleviate the stresses of the waiting patient and parent.
- Practice, in a workshop atmosphere, positive and captivating ways to introduce medical devices and clinical procedures to an apprehensive patient.
- Be taught how to perform an ENT exam in a fun and “magical” way by reducing the trepidation associated with the introduction of the otoscope and speculum.
- Establish an understanding of a patient’s cognitive reasoning through simple puzzles, magic effects and experiments.
- Discuss new techniques in assessing a patient’s critical motor skills through hands-on experimentation with magic tricks and challenges.
- Apply the Side-Fx techniques to add distraction, magic and wonder to a clinical environment.
For Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Medical Education Collaborative (MEC) and Corporate-Fx, Inc. The Side-FX educational sessions are fun, custom-scripted, informational presentations. Each seminar provides valuable educational benefits to the clinician. And, by adding additionally scripted information about your specific drug or treatment, or medical device, the authors become authoritative industry representatives speaking on behalf of your company.
Side-FX is a clever and entertaining alternative to today’s typical dry and boring, in booth promotion. Side-FX live can be sponsored by a pharmaceutical company at most medical meetings or conferences. Companies can use Side-FX in an exhibit hall, in an off-site meeting room, hotel banquet room, or right in a clinic or hospital.
Specifically, Side-FX works best at a venue conducive to providing scientific or educational information to the clinician just as the PhRMA Code suggests!
